Every so often something comes around that changes the way we understand the experience of living, something that helps us perceive ourselves and the people and world around us differently. Positive psychology is a growing area of research and practice that is health- and well-being-based rather than sickness-based. Therefore, it focuses on creating new opportunities to for people to flourish.

Positive psychology is not “positive thinking” in disguise. While positive, it is a reality-based, user-friendly approach that is accessible to most of us. Positive psychology answers the question, “What are humans like at their best?” It helps people focus on the elements of life that will allow them to flourish. For example, positive psychology helps people discover, use, and build on personal strengths more than trying to shore up areas of weakness. It offers insights to help them cultivate positive relationships. In short, positive psychology is about the science of happiness and what makes life worth living.

Why is positive psychology important to us at High Tide Press? Or for that matter, why is it important for all of us working in the fields of developmental disabilities and behavioral health? Precisely because it gives us a big bag of tools that lets us help those we support get more of what will help them flourish. Incidentally, in the process, everyone involved also gets a big dose of the flourishing powers of positive psych.

At High Tide Press, we’re committed to bringing to market products that help people with disabilities (and those who support them) live their best possible life. Positive psychology is one of the best resources we’ve found. We hope you will agree with us.
